Top 5 Antiques Roadshow jackpots

Serious blogging - Mon, 09/06/2010 - 02:02

Grandma’s attic hasn’t looked the same since the premier of Antiques Roadshow fourteen years ago, and even the most devout minimalist who has caught the show has to admit a tinge of curiosity at seeing an estate sale sign on the corner. The items most commonly carried on to the set include Bibles, paintings and china tea cups and are usually worth an average of $100, but every once in a while the show’s appraisers get a real thrill.

A sampling of the top five:

  1. 18th Century Chinese Qianlong Period jade collection. Valued at $710,000 to $1,070,000
  2. Oil painting by Clyfford Still. Valued at $500,000
  3. Navajo First Phase Chief’s Blanket. Valued at $350,000 to $500,000
  4. Oil painting by James Henry Beard of Senator Henry Clay. Valued at $300,000 to $500,000
  5. Original artwork from the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz. Valued at $450,000

Robots replacing people at work

This NYTimes.com original video shows how new technology is allowing robots to make telecommuting easier. Water cooler chatter, hallway bump-ins, and desk swing-bys are all made possible for telecommuters. Mobile robots are equipped with wheels, a computer monitor (for seeing someone's face), and a computer camera. Now folks can roam the building and attend meetings while sitting at desks miles away from HQ. Out-of-sight-out-of-mind telecommuters are so 2009.
